An American study revealed that eating meat is associated with an increased risk of weight gain and obesity, specifically abdominal obesity, among adult males. A research team from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, USA, used the body mass index and waist circumference in its study.
The team collected individual nutrition information from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in the United States between 1999 and 2004.
The results of the study published by the “International Journal of Obesity” issued this month indicate that adult males, who were the most consuming meat among the participants, obtained higher amounts of energy, with an increase of up to 700 calories per day, compared to the group that consumed this type of meat. Food is the lowest among the sample. According to specialists, the diagnosis of abdominal obesity is based on measuring both the waist circumference and the hip circumference, as the person in this case suffers from the accumulation of fat in the abdomen and upper part of the body. Scientific studies have succeeded in providing evidence that abdominal obesity is linked to many diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and others.
