Coffee is good for hepatitis C

A recent American scientific study showed that some liver patients may benefit from drinking coffee on a daily basis, after its results indicated that this hot drink may reduce the possibility of developing the disease in these people.

The study, which will be published in the Journal of Hepatology, issued for the month of November 2009, indicates that drinking two or more cups of coffee per day may reduce the likelihood of developing the disease in hepatitis C patients, by up to 53%. And researchers from the National Cancer Institute in the United States of America conducted a four-year study that included 766 people, who participated in a trial dealing with long-term treatment of cases of cirrhosis of the liver, caused by infection with hepatitis C. At the start of the study, the researchers asked the participants to record the rate and volume of coffee drink consumption during a year prior to the study, and then the participants were distributed into nine categories according to the per capita consumption rate of this type of hot drink, which are as follows: the non-consumer category, the daily consumer category , as well as four other categories, defined depending on the number of cups of coffee a person drinks per day. Commenting on the results of the study, Dr. Neil Friedma said, “The results of the study suggest that patients who consume a high degree of coffee have a lower risk of developing the disease,” warning that these results should not be generalized to healthy people.
