Dr. Rachel Thompson, head of the scientific program at the World Cancer Research Fund, revealed recent studies linking the risk of developing cancer to an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise and being overweight.
The study concluded that these causes increase the risk of developing cancer three times more than those caused by genes or other genetic factors.
Thomson said that recent studies have shown that between 5% and 10% of cancer cases have genetic causes, noting that about 39% of known cancers, including breast and colon cancer, can be avoided through a balanced diet, exercise and obesity.
The myth that the causes of cancer are genetic must be discarded, she added. According to United Press, those who believe that cancer is genetically inherited should abandon these ideas and take the initiative to change their lifestyle.
