Young people who are overweight face a higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer during their lifetime compared to those of normal weight, a new study shows. “This is the first research to analyze at what age excess weight increases a person’s risk of developing pancreatic cancer,” said Dongyi Lee, professor of medicine at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, who led the study. “The aim of this study is to show the link between body mass index and the risk of developing pancreatic cancer during a person’s life, and to determine whether there is a specific stage in life that makes an individual more likely to develop the disease,” he added. “The study finally aims to determine whether there is a link between body mass index (weight divided by the square of height) and the risk of developing pancreatic cancer and the chances of recovery from it,” said Dr. Lee, whose team’s work was published in the “Journal of American Medical Association” on Wednesday. The researchers determined that young people between the ages of fourteen and nineteen who are overweight have a 60% increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer, compared to the group of young people of normal weight. Excess weight increases two or three times the risk of infection in people aged between 20 and 30 years, and this probability appears to decline in people at the age of forty, to become almost negligible in the fifth decade of life.
