Babies are born with a large amount of this enzyme. But with growth, the amount of lactase produced by the body decreases. Adults whose intestines produce very little or no lactase are deficient in this enzyme and are unable to digest lactose-containing foods. Western statistics indicate that one in five people is lactose intolerant.

The degree of lactose tolerance varies. Some people can digest the amount of lactose in half a glass of milk, and they have no problem consuming small amounts of dairy products during the day. But the symptoms begin when they consume several types of dairy products at the same time, or eat one that contains a large amount of lactose.

To relieve symptoms of lactose intolerance, avoid foods rich in lactose or eat them in small amounts. These foods include:

cheese chips
Potato dip or potato layer
halloumi cheese
dried milk
evaporated milk
A mixture of two types of cheese
Ice cream or frozen milk
the milk
ricotta cheese
Sharp cream
Concentrated local milk
white sauces

Yogurt is a good choice because its bacteria digest most of the lactose in it. Other foods that are low in lactose include aged cheeses, butter, margarine, and sherbet. The non-dairy creamer is lactose-free.

In stores, tablets or drops of certain brands, such as Lactaid or Dairy Ease, contain the enzyme lactase, which often prevents or eliminates the symptoms of lactose intolerance. Some types of milk sold in grocery stores contain lactase.

Cutting down on fatty foods such as fried meat, cream sauces, gravy, and fatty pastries may also help. Food that is high in fat often slows down digestion and gives food more time to ferment. Gas can also be caused by the artificial sweeteners sorbitol and mannitol, which are found in diet candies and sugar-free gum.

However, it is very important not to completely exclude nutritious foods such as vegetables and fruits from your diet because they cause gas. You can even discuss your eating options with a registered dietitian to make sure you’re maintaining a healthy diet while reducing gas. You can also try some non-prescription preparations such as “Beano” (a food enzyme) that reduces gas formation, or preparations containing simethicone, which relieves gas.

Foods rich in fiber are good for digestion and health. However, doubling your daily fiber intake quickly can cause gas. So gradually increase your fiber intake over a few weeks. A nutritionist can advise you about foods that are rich in fiber and less gas.

Regular exercise also reduces intestinal gas by helping to prevent constipation.

What is meant by lactose intolerance?
