This number is very large and frightening, because high pressure is a strong indicator of an increased risk of heart disease and kidney failure, because high blood pressure increases the load on the heart and kidneys. He mentions the news, which is confirmed by the American Heart Association website, that 90 to 95% of the causes of high pressure are unknown, so can food play a role in this? It is known that an increase in sodium (salt) in the body raises pressure. When sodium/salt increases in the body, the body retains fluids in an attempt to “wash” this salt to get rid of it, and increasing fluids in the body raises the general pressure of the body. The advice to reduce salt includes not only table salt that is added during cooking processes, but also “hidden” salt, meaning sodium, which is used as a preservative in many processed foods. Therefore, the following must be done:

Do not put salt on the table, as this is tempting to add unnecessary amounts of salt.
When buying food products, read the labels and compare them, and choose the ones that have no sodium or the ones that have less sodium.
When buying spices, buy them whole and grind them at home, that is, avoid spices that have been previously mixed and ground because they most likely contain salt to preserve them and improve their taste. And completely avoid the use of the so-called white pepper, that is, monosodium glutamate (MSG), because it is very harmful because it is rich in sodium.
Avoid eating preserved meats such as sausages (and hot dogs), mortadella, etc. Due to the abundance of sodium in it.
Avoid ready-made soup mixes, whether liquid or powder, as they are full of sodium.
Avoid eating pickles, and don’t eat too much salty cheese.
Steer clear of ketchup, soy sauce, and salad dressings, and substitute lemon juice and olive oil for your salad dressing.
Stay away as much as possible from chips, popcorn, nuts and salty crackers.
Reduce fatty foods that cause obesity, as obesity often leads to high pressure.
More than exercise, movement and breathing deeply, because this leads to an expansion of the arteries and a decrease in pressure.
Eat more fiber-rich foods (whole grains, vegetables, and fruits) because fiber helps the body get rid of sodium.
Make sure to eat foods rich in potassium such as bananas, oranges, unsalted nuts, whole grains, legumes, and meat, because potassium equals sodium (the body gets rid of it), the more potassium the lower the sodium.
There are studies that indicate that eating certain foods such as cocoa, fish oil and olive oil, and the availability of certain nutrients in the body such as vitamin D, vitamin C, and calcium, can reduce high pressure.

It is important to mention that there is a tendency not to rely on reducing sodium only to prevent high pressure, as the relationship of food to high pressure needs a lot of studies, especially since more than 90% of the causes of high pressure are unknown. It is now certain that eating whole, unprocessed or refined foods provides the body with all the nutrients that help it balance and get rid of toxins, including an increase in salt. The evidence for this is that the problem of high blood pressure is spreading in the United States of America, where the population depends on processed foods, where 30% of people suffer from high blood pressure.

On Monday, Rabi` Al-Awwal 19, Al-Riyadh newspaper published a news item on its last page stating that 22% of all Saudis suffer from high blood pressure!!
