However, can white sugar be dispensed with after its use spread like wildfire? Attempts to search for alternatives present the following options:

brown sugar

Brown sugar is usually white sugar to which, after refining, an amount of molasses has been added to suggest that it is beneficial. But why is the molasses added and removed during the sugar refining process? Manufacturers do this in order to control the amount of moisture in the sugar (so that the sugar does not spoil quickly during transportation and marketing) and to obtain uniformity in the size of the sugar crystals. Nutritionally speaking, brown sugar contains calcium, potassium, iron and magnesium while white sugar contains none. But the presence of these minerals in very small quantities does not make a significant difference between brown sugar and white sugar. In terms of calories, there are 17 calories in a teaspoon of brown sugar, and 16 calories in a teaspoon of white sugar. That is, replacing white sugar with so-called brown sugar makes little difference except in terms of taste.

raw sugar

It is also refined sugar, and if it is not completely refined, 5-10% of the molasses is left in the sugar to give it a brown color. Like brown sugar, it is not a healthy alternative to white sugar.

fruit sugar (fructose)

If the consumption of fructose is through eating fruits in moderation, this is good because fruits are rich in vitamins and fibers that are beneficial for health. As for the consumption of fructose as a sweetener, it first spread as a suitable sweetener for diabetic patients because its digestion does not require the secretion of insulin. But this has a downside because the body absorbs fructose (a sweetener, not naturally found in fruits) quickly and converts it into glycerol (a fat), which raises triglycerides and cholesterol levels. And there are more downsides to fructose, as studies have shown that consuming fructose as a sweetener leads to insulin-resistance that makes it difficult to lose weight even on a diet!! This is where high fructose corn syrup got its bad reputation. This product, which is used in many processed foods and drinks (especially soft drinks and juices), is, according to specialists, one of the most important reasons for the spread of obesity in countries where the consumption of so-called fast foods is high.

Diet sugar

Including artificial sweeteners or so-called sugar substitutes, and there are many of them, the most famous of which are aspartame, saccharin, sucralose and sorbitol, which are manufactured so that they are not absorbed by the body, so they are without calories. But they are unnatural chemicals that are not digested by the intestines, so they stick to water molecules and cause diarrhea and gas. There is also controversy that it may cause diseases ranging from headaches or depression to cancer (where saccharin was banned in 1977 because it caused bladder cancer in experimental mice, and then it was allowed!!).

Stevia

Stevia is a natural alternative to sugar, free of calories and rich in beneficial nutrients. “Al-Riyadh” published extensive information about it in issue 13833 and issue 13840, and there is no need to repeat it.

Day by day, information is increasing that confirms that white sugar is harmful to health.
